On Wednesday.Amnesty's Africa director Netsanet Belay reacted to the issue of the Baga attack of January 3 that killed, hundreds,if not more.
He said that,it is clear that Nigeria's military leadership has failed woefully and repeatedly since they were warned of the impending attack and threat posed by Boko Haram,Amnesty said that it received information from senior military officers and other sources, that defence officials were told about Boko Haram's plan to attack both Baga and Monguno, but the military did not act on requests to send reinforcements.
He stated that this is a major set back for the military, because they have repeatedly failed in their duty to protect civilians of Baga and Monguno.
On Baga,Amnesty said troops in the town in extreme north of Borno state reported a build up of insurgent fighters in the area, before the attack, and that militant rebels warned civilians about an impending strike and several residents fled.
Monguno residents reported that when they got news of an impending attack, they told the military, but they refused to take any action.Chris Olukolade, the defence spokesman refused to answer calls seeking comment on the allegation, but the military has repeatedly described Amnesty as an unreliable organization with a political agenda.
Civilian have repeatedly been left defenseless in the face of attacks, and human rights groups and Western diplomats across Nigeria have widely criticized the security services for their handling of the six-year Boko Haram uprising.
